The right to participate in elections on an equal basis, not just as a voter but also as a candidate and as a member of any political party, is fundamental to an unbiased democratic process. Laws that disenfranchise demographic groups or alternative political parties must be repealed. Just as important as the right of citizens to vote is the right of citizens to participate as candidates in the political process, regardless of partisan affiliation. In our efforts to promote a safe and secure election process we ought to look at all levels at the barriers to participation represented by discriminatory ballot laws and election processes that work to reduce or eliminate the ability of voters to support the candidates of their choice.
