January 6th was personal to us in D.C. and to me. The government stationed a tank outside a popular breakfast place near my home after the attack. It was our Metropolitan Police Department that responded to the attack and protected the U.S. Capitol, and at least one MPD officer was killed in the line of duty due to the events of January 6th. The people of D.C. will never forget what Donald Trump and the Republican Party did to us that day. I fear we could be facing even worse after this election, and I will do everything I can to protect D.C. from those who do not respect our democratic institutions. We must ensure that voters have faith in the integrity of our election process and that those involved in our elections abide by the rule of law, not only to protect the people of D.C., but to prevent such threats to our democracy and our country in the future.
